Description

Advanced Batteries for Electric Vehicle and Grid Energy Storage ApplicationsThis is a partnership between three researchers at Dalhousie University, Tesla Canada and Tesla to develop advanced batteries for electric vehicle (EV) and electrical energy storage (EES) applications. Tesla is the world leader in both electric vehicles and electrical energy storage. At this time Dalhousie is the only university with which Tesla has partnered in the area of advanced battery R+D which speaks to the quality of the research team. The goals of this project are: 1. Lower the costs of batteries for EV and EES applications;2. Increase the lifetime of batteries for EV and ESS applications;3. Increase the energy density of batteries for EV and ESS applications;4. Maintain or improve the safety of batteries for EV and ESS applications; 5. Increase the content of sustainable materials in the batteries and6. Ensure that equity, diversity and inclusiveness are front and center in both the project and in the research team.Achieving these goals will make electric vehicles and renewable energy more accessible and more affordable for all Canadians. This application builds on the successful NSERC IRC partnership between Dalhousie and Tesla (2016-2021) where Jeff Dahn is the chairholder. In this proposal, the Dalhousie team is expanded to include Dr. Chongyin Yang as the Tesla Canada Chair and Michael Metzger as the Herzberg-Dahn Chair. These outstanding young researchers complement Dr. Dahn's expertise and will ensure that Dalhousie remains a world leader in advanced battery technology and a highly regarded source of personnel trained in advanced battery science and technology.
