Description

Industrial developments in the ocean, such as oil and gas exploration and production, shipping, and aquacultureare accelerating. The impacts of these activities need to be carefully managed to meet regulatory requirements, sustainable development goals and prevent continued biodiversity loss through over-exploitation. Acting on acommission from the oceans-related research-intensive universities, the Council of Canadian Academies(CCA) defined a set of questions that, if answered, would have the greatest impact on oceans understandingand management relevant to Canada. This workshop, in particular, facilities the knowledge translation processand builds these new partnerships and collaborations to synthesize, communicate, and exchange ideas that willultimately lead to an improved ocean research and management landscape in Canada. This workshop will focuson the following objectives:1) In the lead-up to the workshop, identify relevant collective resources and major capital assets of oceansnetworks and participating industries across Canada to create a 'menu' for collaboration and data sharing2) Document existing industrial collaborations between industry and Canadian ocean networks, their successesat knowledge transfer, and areas where improvements could be realized3) Identify specific industrial needs and interrelate them to existing ocean infrastructure4) Identify the weakness of and gaps in Canada's current ocean infrastructure5) Identify areas of collaboration using combined resources and expertise to specifically address questions #23and #25 (see above) from the CCA report
