Canadian Sepsis Research Network: Improving CareBefore, During and After Sepsis

Sepsis, the life-threatening response to infection, costs the Canadians more than $1.5 billon each year, leads to more than 1 in 18 deaths each year, and leaves many survivors with significant disability. In 2016 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared sepsis a global emergency. To meet the WHO strategic plan in Canada, team members are committed to identifying at risk populations, develop novel strategies to prevent and reduce the economic and health burden by 30% in 2025. This sepsis team will bring together Critical Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paramedic and Diabetes experts. We will partner with patients who have survived sepsis and family members who have lost loved-ones. We have identified stakeholders within the professional organizations and government. Our network has identified the following projects: 1. Develop and construct a Pan-Canadian framework to identify and interpret the the complex nature of human sepsis. 2. Develop a structure to study the mechanisms associated with variations of sepsis presentation and outcomes. 3. Develop innovative animal and human sepsis studies that address complexity and are targeted toward sepsis prevention, identification, treatment and recovery. 4. Improve the pre-hospital recognition of sepsis amongst the Canadian public and health professionals. 5. Identify what helps to improve sepsis care in Canadian Emergency Departments. 6. Develop a structure to identify and catalogue sepsis from current information. 7. Describe where and in who sepsis occurs 8. Describe the cost of sepsis To support these projects we there is a core that supports the teams. We will train our patient partners in research methods to lead their own qualitative program. Our proposed research will improve sepsis recognition and prevention, develop innovative treatment strategies, improve the sepsis knowledge of the public and health professionals and improve the outcomes of those who develop sepsis.
