Description
From the instant a person sustains a significant brain or spinal cord injury, a lifetime effort for recovery begins. Neurotrauma (traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or spinal cord (SCI)) affects almost every physiological system, profoundly impacts economic, social and emotional wellbeing of patients and families, and requires long term management of chronic complications. The Neurotrauma to Neurorecovery Network (NtoN) is a collaboration of researchers, healthcare providers, patients and policymakers, driven by SCI and TBI organizations and dedicated to to move new innovations and treatments into human studies. NtoN is dedicated to accelerating the pace at which such innovations benefit the function, wellbeing and care of patients living with the chronic sequelae and complications of neurotraumatic conditions. This network is for the first time approaching TBI and SCI with patients as partners, addressing chronic complications that patients have long prioritized, and understanding TBI and SCI from across the lifespan. This network aims to make Canada a leader in neurorecovery research to benefit SCI and TBI, and other neurological disorders. By unifying the Canadian neurotrauma community, NtoN will align TBI and SCI organizations across the country to pioneer a truly equitable, sustainable and interactive model of patient engagement. NtoN will also develop a harmonized platform of existing administrative and research databases to allow population based surveillance; implement an integrated knowledge translation model; and incorporate mechanisms to influence health decision-making, system improvement and policy across the country for the ultimate benefit of neurotrauma patients, families and their care.
