Description
Bioactive paper that can detect and deactivate dangerous bacteria and viruses in food and water will deliver health benefits around the world. Bioactive Paper is a made-in-Canada concept articulated in the first phase (2005-2010) of the Sentinel Bioactive Paper Network, an NSERC strategic network. The second phase (2010-2014) of Sentinel is focused on bringing bioactive paper out of Canadian university laboratories to the market place. Scientific efforts are focused on the most promising technology platforms from the first phase including detection based on bacteriophage, DNA aptamers and sol-gel encapsulated proteins. Our commercialization efforts are bolstered by new industrial partners, extending partnership from paper producers to multinational consumer products companies. The Sentinel Bioactive Paper Network is led from McMaster University and includes researchers from the University of Guelph, University of Toronto, McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of New Brunswick, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Université de Montrèal, and École Polytechnique de Montrèal.
