Abstract

A 5 mm × 5 mm square histotripsy transducer was built using a 1/4wavelength matching-layer coated aluminum lens bonded to an air-backed 1-3 piezoelectric composite with a 45% volume fraction of PZT5A and a 5 MHz resonance. With a focal length of 5 mm the transducer was found to have a steady-state negative pressure trend of 8.3 MPa/100 V at 6.5 MHz with a -3 dB beam width ranging from 0.107 mm to 0.118 mm. Beam length was measured to be 0.871 mm. The addition of a series tuning element allowed increased power delivery to the transducer, and a sustained cavitation bubble cloud was observed when driven at 6.5 MHz with a 350 V peak-to-peak drive voltage, 15 cycle pulse at 1 kHz PRF.
