Abstract

Guanoxan and guanethidine were studied in 52 patients with essential hypertension using a double-blind crossover technique. No difference was seen in the hypotensive effects of the two drugs. Blood pressure in the standing position (systolic /diastolic) was decreased by 30 25 mm. Hg and in the recumbent position, by 20 15 mm. Hg; postexercise blood pressure was decreased by 45 40 mm. Hg. Fatigue was a more common complaint after administration of guanethidine, but otherwise guanoxan and guanethidine were similar in efficacy and in adverse effects. Twenty-four hour urinary excretion of norepinephrine, but not epinephrine, was decreased during therapy with both drugs.
