Abstract
Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) is a form of psychotherapy that evokes emotional experiences with the patient to facilitate a corrective emotional experience. During ISDTP, verbal and non-verbal communication skills play an essential role in how the dialogue is directed to achieve successful treatment. In an attempt to enhance non-verbal communication skills, we present a framework that allows for the simple creation of a dialogue between the user and a virtual avatar representing the patient. The patient avatar incorporates facial expressions to express specific non-verbal communication thus expose psychotherapy trainees to better simulated nonverbal cues.
