Abstract

Data support the hypothesis that adult female and immature Physeter macrocephalus off the Galapagos Islands and mainland Ecuador belong to different populations, although a movement of ten whales from the Galapagos to Ecuador was observed. A possible explanation for this movement is that these whales could have migrated to the Ecuador area to fill a vacancy by recent whaling along the coast. However, this hypothesis was not supported by the mark type analysis since these whales were more similar to the Ecuador whales than to the Galapagos whales. -from Authors
