Abstract

The measurement of tracheal flow in small animals using pneumotachographs can be problematic, since a tradeoff between precision and input impedance of the measurements device is encountered. In this paper, we present a method of estimating tracheal flow in small animals purely from the geometry of the experimental ventilator, without any additional resistance in the air pathway. The performance of this technique ion the frequency range of 0 to 30 Hz is compared quantitatively to pneumotachographs of an appropriate size.
