Abstract

We present the first experiment in two-qubit quantum state tomography to take advantage of the power of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). These bases are optimal for extracting the maximum amount of information about a state from some finite number of measurements. With experimental data and simulation we show that mutually unbiased bases can generally allow better state estimation than the standard set of measurements and discuss the relative advantages of different sets of bases.
