Abstract
A microprocessor-based contractility instrument is described. The unit accepts the left ventricular pressure and electrocardiogram; identifies the isovolumic contraction period; and computes the velocity of contraction of heart muscle fibres using digital algorithms. It has been tested on five dogs under control conditions, as well as after drug administration, and for various preloads.
