Abstract

Clinical pathology is the medical discipline that utilizes laboratory-based testing to provide data to aid clinicians in the care of patients. For almost every type of health maintenance exam as well as disease state, a clinical pathology laboratory can provide diagnostic or prognostic information. This field is also referred to as laboratory medicine since the testing is routinely performed in laboratories. The laboratories are directed either by clinical pathologists, typically with additional fellowship training, or by an individual with a PhD who has completed a clinical fellowship in a specific area of laboratory medicine.
