Abstract

The dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii has been shown to have in vitro sensitivity to the allylamine terbinafine. In experimental murine sporotrichosis, terbinafine was not effective in either curing the animals or in prolonging life. However, terbinafine is an effective treatment for human cutaneous sporotrichosis, with all 18 patients so far treated being cured. The optimal dose and the duration of treatment have not been established, but the successful treatment of four patients with a dose of only 125 mg/day suggests that lower dosages may be adequate.
