Abstract

Risperidone was administered in an open uncontrolled trial to 11 adolescent hospitalized patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenic disorders. The mean age of the group was 15.83 years (range 14 - 18 years). After five weeks treatment seven patients (63.6%) improved markedly, four patients (36.4%) improved slightly or did not improve. During five week treatment the authors recorded a decline of the mean GGI from 5.82 to 3.2 (p < 0.005), the score of positive symptoms declined from 5.45 to 1.2 (p < 0.008) and the score of negative symptoms from 4.73 to 2.6 (p < 0.008). The quality of life rated on the ten point scale increased from 3 to 5.5 the (p < 0.025) and problems with adaptation the six point scale evaluated on a six point scale declined from 4.81 to 3.5 (p < 0.005). The period of hospitalization after administration of risperidone till discharge was on average 6.9 weeks. In the evaluation of CGI and positive symptoms a marked reduction of symptoms was recorded already after one week. As regards negative symptoms and adaptation there was marked improvement which could be demonstrated after the second week of treatment. Improvement of the quality of life was apparent already from the first week of treatment, however, it reached significance only after the third week of treatment. Undesirable extrapyramidal effects were recorded temporarity in four patients. The therapeutic results were the better, the shorter was the duration of the disease before risperidone administration.
