Abstract
Rhizotomies have been known to alleviate spasticity for over 100 years. However, refinements in patient selection and selection of rootlets to be lesioned on the basis of response to stimulation have rendered selective dorsal rhizotomies a treatment of choice in selected children only over the last 20 years. Significant long term benefits in lower and upper extremity function and in bladder status have been demonstrated in patients having undergone this procedure as it is currently performed.
