Abstract
Recent research on urinary tract infections has focused on the delicate balance of the host-parasite relationship. Bacterial factors that favour infection include pill that aid in the critical stage of adherence to mucosal surfaces, and two host factors important in determining the risk for urinary tract infections are blood group and secretor status, both of which affect bacterial adherence. The pathogenesis of renal scarring is related more to the host response to infection than to the aetiologic bacteria. The renal transplant population has traditionally been at high risk for urinary tract infections, but routine antibiotic prophylaxis has reduced this problem substantially.
