Description
Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in Canada. For example, in 1997, they were the 7th leading cause of potential years of life lost in Canada, and among young people aged 0-19 were the third leading cause (NCIC, 2001). Driver factors have been identified as the leading cause of collisions. While research attention to these causes of collisions has increased in recent years, nevertheless research on this topic remains poorly funded and fragmented. The proposed research team would bring together leading Canadian investigators on collision causation and prevention to undertake a coordinated and comprehensive program of research designed to stimulate knowledge generation and create successful policy, prevention and remedial initiatives to reduce the unnecessary health and economic burden created by MVCs.
