Optimization of filler content in epoxy adhesives for industrial, transportation, and aerospace applications

I propose to collaborate with 3M Canada to develop new epoxy adhesives to provide strong adhesion betweencomponents while minimizing the inevitable shrinkage of the cured adhesives.3M Canada and its parent company are world leaders in the R&D and manufacture of epoxy adhesives andresin-based composites. Epoxy adhesives are used routinely in industries to provide strong adhesion betweenassembly components. For instance, they can be utilised to bond inserts and pins in light synthetic panel with ahoneycomb structure. The panel is covered with thin protective layers of wood veneers. These compositeassemblies are then used as construction materials in the transportation and aerospace industries. However, theinherent shrinkage of 3 - 6 % of the cured epoxy adhesives result in buckling and defects in the assemblies. Asa result these assemblies may have weakened mechanical properties.In this project co-funded by the Consortium for Aerospace Research and Innovation's (CARIC) AeroConnectprogram, I will work with 3M Canada to develop a new epoxy loaded with filler particles with very lowshrinkage and enhanced mechanical characteristics. The epoxy-filler composites will be prepared at 3MCanada and will be evaluated in my lab at Dalhousie University for their materials properties. 3M Canada isunable to conduct these evaluations because of the expertise, techniques and equipment available either in mylab or department and are not in 3M Canada's facilities. These resources will provide 3M Canada with theanalysis and product feedback that they require. These results will be used to optimize the filler content andcomposite chemistry.
