Description
This application is in support of the creation of an Alberta-based multi-institutional training program in translational cancer research to equip future researchers with the intellectual and practical skills to work at the boundaries between discovery and applied research on problems in prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. The training program is a partnership between the Alberta Cancer Board and its cancer centers (the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary), the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta and the Cancer Biology Research Group at the University of Calgary. The research areas in which graduate and postdoctoral training will be offered include applications of advanced technologies in proteomics, genomics, and molecular imaging to cancer diagnosis and treatment. Translational research trainees will have the opportunity to participate in research programs in molecular and biologic therapeutics, pharmacogenetics, image-guided adaptive radiotherapy and palliative care medicine. The training program will increase the capacity of the Alberta and Canadian cancer research community to conduct research that translates fundamental knowledge into practice.
