Re-examining the moral foundations of research

Détails sur le projet

Description

We are living in a time defined in part by unprecidented scientific advances. Genetic research holds the promise of unlocking the genetic mechanisms of disease, and creating novel therapies targetted to correct gene defects. Clinical trials are helping to put medicine on a firmer scientific foundation. Scientific advance must, however, itself be built on a firm ethical foundation. The purpose of this grant is to re-examine and refine elements of the moral foundations of research. It will use historical, philosophical, and policy analysis to acheive this end. Three main projects will be undertaken in this program of research. First, as families are increasingly targetted in genetic studies, the moral framework of research will be retooled to take into account the special moral status of the family. Second, if research participants are to be adequately protected, we need a much better understanding of how to think about research risk. Third, this novel understanding of the ethical analysis of research risk will be used to informed some of the most controversial policy debates of our day, including the conduct of research in emergency rooms and developing countries. This program of research offers ample opportunity for training young bioethicists, and results will be made widely available on the world-wide web.
