Description

Kidney failure is a growing public health problem and it is fatal unless treated. The most common treatment for kidney failure in Australia is haemodialysis and kidney transplant. When, and how often, to start haemodialysis (HD) is an important decision. Most patients start HD three times per week (conventional HD), however this approach may not be suitable for all patients; there is some evidence it may actually be harmful. An alternative approach is to start a less frequent twice-weekly (incremental) HD routine. The INCH-HD trial will test if incremental HD preserves the quality of life of patients and families and is a safe, practical, cost effective treatment option.
