Description

Attachment - Abstract Three-dimensional ocean noise modeling The objective of this work is to develop and validate computational techniques for providing accurate predictions of ocean ambient noise spectral, temporal and three-? dimensional spatial properties in regions of complex bathymetry and oceanography. An infinite sheet of any prescribed distribution of surface noise sources can be simulated using a single computation with a three-?dimensional parabolic equation acoustic propagation model by invoking the reciprocal nature of the wave equation. These three-?dimensional noise simulations will be benchmarked against analytical models of ambient noise in azimuthally symmetric deep and shallow water. Additionally, quasi-?analytical models of the spatial properties of noise in a canyon and trench will be developed and compared against simulation results and experimental data.
