Experiments on unobstructed veins exposed at opera- tion indicate that trauma to the vein wall results in a release of fibrinolytic activity of considerable amount. Non-fibrinolytic plasma introduced into isolated seg- ments of exposed veins develops considerable fibrinolytic activity in a short time. These results are best explained by release of fibrinolytic activator from vein walls. It is conjectured that venous thrombosis similarly excites release of activator which determines the fate of the thrombus. Observations in twenty-one patients have failed to confirm the arteriovenous difference in blood-fibrinolytic activity reported previously, and it is suggested that this difference may have been due to the use of local anaesthesia for the arterial punctures.
