N2 - The reaction of macrophages cells to crosslinked, acellularized bovine pericardium (BP) was analyzed. The cellular reaction was characterized by the activity of enzyme synthesis and secretion as well as cell morphology. It was found that host inflammatory cells can however react to the material itself, possibly as a non-specific reaction. It was also found that even if the removal of cellular components was complete, acellularization may nevertheless expose components of the extracellular matrix that themselves stimulate the reaction.
