Résumé
Various sexual differences were reported in epidemiology of psychiatric disorders. Specific hormonally dependent life cycles as perimenstrual period, menarche, postpartum, perimenopause or menopause may precipitate psychiatric symptomatology. In these events, sexual steroid hormones play an important role. In particular, estrogens with their complex effects on brain functions may be responsible for the susceptibility of women to affective or psychotic disorders. Lack of estrogens, their surplus or dysbalance with other gonadal hormones, which, on the other hand, are under feedback control of estrogens, may trigger psychiatric syndromes among susceptible women. It follows that stabilization of hormonal homeostasis by estrogen treatment as adjuvant antidepressant or antipsychotic therapy might be helpful in some cases of hormonal related psychiatric disorders.
