Résumé

The results of an investigation of the failure of the poly(ethylene) sheathing on an aluminum wire rope are reported. The sheathing cracked while the rope was in storage. It was reported that this type of failure had not been observed for other lots of this wire rope and that the failed lot had been handled and stored in a similar manner to lots that had not failed. Failure surface analysis indicated that the sheathing failed by a brittle slow crack growth mechanism. The failure was attributed to differences in the poly(ethylene)s used in the failed and good lots of sheathing, and handling of the wire rope after it was received from the manufacturer. Crown
