N2 - The therapeutic effectiveness of bethanechol has been the subject of controversy. This study documents its effectiveness in initiating micturition and lowering postvoid residual urine when given subcutaneously to seven patients with lower motor neuron lesions. By contrast, the effect was not as consistent when bethanecol was given orally. Disturbing side effects seem to occur with repeated subcutaneous administration. The development of methods by which serum levels could be accurately measured is recommended.
