The jet set

The 7 papers, presented as a symposium at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, in May 1988, survey various animal groups which use jet propulsion as a locomotion mechanism. Emphasis is on the types of mechanism, swimming velocities and energy efficiencies, and the papers deal with: aspects of jet propulsion in salps; size-related hydrodynamic characteristics of giant scallop Placopecten magellanicus; tuned oscillations in the swimming scallop Pecten maximus; respiratory and cardiac function during exercise in squid; giant axons and control of jetting in the squid Loligo and the jellyfish Aglantha; jet propulsion of Nautilus - a surviving example of early Palaeozoic cephalopod locomotor design; oxygen extraction and jet propulsion in cephalopods. -J.W.Cooper
