Congenital nephroma of infancy: Induction of renal structures by organ culture

Résumé

A group of renal tumors has been described in newborn infants, which differs from Wilms' tumors by the absence of recognizable renal structures, the presence of sheets of spindle-shaped cells, and the lack of metastasis. Small portions of one of these tumors were placed in organ culture adjacent to fetal mouse brain for 48 to 96 hours. Tumor tissue adjacent to the neural tissue demonstrated palisading of cells within 48 hours and formation of primitive nephron elements within 96 hours. These studies demonstrate that this tumor has a nephrogenic origin and suggest possible investigative approaches to the process of tumor formation through faulty embryonic induction.
